About the Department
The Department of Medicine and Cosmetics is responsible for ascertaining that all medicines (Human, herbal and veterinary), cosmetics and medical devices are of that acceptable quality, safety and efficacy before being allowed to circulate in the Zanzibar market. It is the responsibility of the Department to conduct inspection and post marketing surveillance of medicines, cosmetics and medical devices circulating in the market. The department also controls clinical trials, evaluate and monitor adverse drug reactions, regulate pharmacy profession and promote effective communication of drug information to the public.

Functions of DMC
- To regulate the registration, importation and exportation of medicines, cosmetics and medical devices
- Conduction of post marketing surveillance and pharmacovigilance activities
- Registration of premises and provision of business permit to those who are involved in the business of medicinal products, cosmetics and medical devices
- To scientifically evaluate requests and monitor clinical trials
